Is it true that the British SAS almost caught Bin Laden in 2001?

I was just reading somewhere that the SAS were minutes away from capturing him in 2001. However, a US general told them to hold off until Delta Force got there. He wanted it to look as if the Americans had caught him. I just wanted to know if this is true or not.
