How can I programme a microchip or microprocessor to work in a hand-made device ?

i am trying to make a project... a sort of invention...and i really need to use microchips or microprocessors in it....how can that be accomplished as i need to use it as per my device...please tell me or teach me how to do that and even how to establish communication between two microchips/processors ????
